I feel like it is a good idea to have a workout partner who you workout with consistently. There are several reasons for this. The first, being for encouragement reasons. The second for support reasons and lastly for safety reasons.
Have you ever felt like you did not want to workout on a day you were supposed to? If you have a partner you always work out with, chances are they will encourage you to go and you will then feel obligated because you do not want to let them down. Not only can they encourage you to go, but they can encourage you while your at the gym as well. Say you do not feel like performing that last set. You can count on that other person to make you do it. Or even on a smaller scale, they can encourage you to pump out that one extra rep that you may not have done without that partner there.
Another reason it is good to have a partner to workout with is for support. Your partner may know other lifts or ideas that you do not. You can count on them to help you while you are performing the exercise as well. Say you are squatting for example: your partner can let you know if you are going low enough in your squat so that you get the perfect form.
Lastly a good reason to have a partner is for safety reasons. Having a partner and especially the same partner all the time is good so that they can spot you on lifts that need spotting. For instance, the bench press. It is always a good idea to have a spotter while benching so the barbell does not collapse on you. The same partner is a good idea because they tend to know how strong you are and can usually tell when you might be in need of assistance.
One last point I would make is that it is usually a good idea to get a partner with about your same fitness and strength levels so that you do not have to change the weights drastically. However on the other side of things, if you lift with someone who can lift more than you, it may also be a motivator to try and get stronger. It all depends on how you look at things.
